How to Read a Strategy Map in Ten Seconds

September 2, 2026 · Lukas Brenner

Real-time strategy on a phone can feel like drinking from a firehose. Playing Ironline Command taught me that most of my early losses came not from bad tactics but from failing to read the map quickly enough. Here's what changed.

First: scan for choke points before you do anything else. Narrow passes and single bridges decide most battles. If you know where they are, you know where the fight will happen and can plan backward from there.

Second: trace your supply lines, then trace your enemy's. Cutting off supply is almost always cheaper than winning a head-on fight. I now spend my first thirty seconds just looking, not clicking.

Third: don't spread thin. Two strong squads beat five weak ones nearly every time. It's tempting to defend everything, but defending everything usually means defending nothing.

These sound obvious written down, but forming them into instinct took me a dozen missions. Once they clicked, the whole genre got more fun and a lot less stressful.
